How we calculated this

The converter maps each score to an NCLC level with the official IRCC equivalency table for Express Entry: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/documents/language-test.html (method checked 2026-10-20).

For TCF Canada, the table is the single IRCC table: speaking and writing on 0-20, listening and reading on 0-699. NCLC 10 starts at 16 for speaking and writing and at 549 for listening and reading. Scores below the NCLC 4 band show 0.

Each field accepts only whole numbers inside the TCF Canada range for that ability. A TEF Canada score does not fit here: use the TEF Canada converter for that test.

Rules change. Always confirm your level on the IRCC page above before you submit a profile. This tool is not immigration advice.

Questions

Why are speaking and writing only out of 20?
TCF Canada scores speaking and writing from 0 to 20. Listening and reading run from 0 to 699. IRCC publishes one table with those scales.
Why does only my lowest ability matter?
Express Entry reads each ability separately and the French bonus and French-language category require NCLC 7 or higher in all four. Your weakest ability decides whether you qualify.
How long is my test valid?
IRCC accepts results less than two years old, both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you apply for permanent residence.
